Crawshaw Make the Grade with a Winning Combination

A team of students from Crawshaw School came out on top in a unique competition set up by the Make the Grade initiative in conjunction with Leeds Ahead and business partner Asda to design a new flavour of ice cream.  The competition was launched in December at a trio of Leeds schools by representatives from Asda and their supplier, the R & R ice cream company.   Teams of Year 9 students competed against one another in school to design a flavour of ice cream to take into the final of the competition at Asda House on Friday 1st February.

The teams worked extremely hard at lunchtime and after school to come up with a new idea.  They then presented their ideas to judges from Asda, the school and Make the Grade at Crawshaw and after a lot of deliberation one team was selected to represent the school in the final.  This team went on to present their idea in a Dragon's Den style competition at Asda House against 2 other schools - Cockburn & Ralph Thorsby.  Alix Frosdick, Charlotte Thomas and Maia Wood delivered an amazing and very professional presentation.  The 'Dragons' were most complimentary and announced them as overall winners. The students then had to pitch their idea again to an executive board.

Busy planning the winning presentation

The winning design was based on the flavour of Jaffa Cakes/ Chocolate Orange with pieces of orange and shortbread throughout.  When asked to sum up their experience in a few words, the girls said “awesome” “really, really cool” and “stressful but worth it!”  Mrs Stockdale, Head of Design & Technology, who supported the team with their preparations and accompanied them on the day said “The girls were a credit to the school and now have the opportunity to work with the Product Development Teams at Asda & R & R ice cream company to further develop their idea and see it being sold in Asda in September.”  Mrs Ruse, Headteacher added “This was another fantastic opportunity provided to the school through our involvement with the Make the Grade programme which has seen our students really engage and consider their options for the future.”
