Geography Students Excel at Team Debate

On Tuesday 2nd May students from the Y13 Geography class participate in the annual Millennium Development Goals (MDG) debate at Leeds University. Seven schools were involved, the others being Lawnswood, Guiseley, Fulneck, Rossett, St Wilfreds Featherstone, York College.

There are eight 'Millennium Development Goals' which have been decided by the United Nations as being the most important in the field of human development. These were declared in 2000 and the aim was to meet them by 2015. People have different views as to which Goal should have priority so this was a chance for the students to to air their views and try to win the debate.

The class had collaboratively put together a presentation arguing for the maintenance of their allocated goal – to Reduce Child Mortality – post 2015 when the Goals are due to end. The students, Lucy Crampton, Megan Rowley-Coates, Carl Gathercole and James Copley then presented as part of the debate.

They then had to answer questions from the floor based around their MDG.  They responded to this very well demonstrating maturity and an ability to not get flustered by being put on the spot. Mr Ghosal, Assistant Headteacher, who accompanied the team ot the event said “The quality of their responses was impressive. The audience, around 70 pupils, adults and guests then ranked the presentations based upon quality of the responses and the quality of facts, data and information in the presentation – our team was ranked third,” He added “I was really pleased and proud of them.”
