International Ambassadors raise funds for Tong Len

On Thursday 23 February 2012 we were visited by a group of representatives from The Lodge of Hope who presented the school with a cheque for £250 towards our fundraising for Tong Len, one of our nominated charities.  The generous donation, which was secured by Crawshaw 6th Former and International Ambassador, Mark Hopper was presented to the school by Mr G Priestley, Neil Johnson and John Stone.  Mark was joined at the presentation by Head of Post 16, Cath Pheasey.  The donation will be added to the money raised through a non-uniform fundraising day which takes place at Crawshaw on Friday 9th March.

Mark Hopper is one of a group of Student International Ambassadors who have been working with staff & peers to help promote the school's humanities ethos and develop the idea of global citizenship.  They have taken part in a range of fundraising activities Mark, joined by Head of Post 16, Cath Pheasey with members of The Lodge of Hopewhich have resulted, for example, in the school sponsoring a child and part-funding the construction of a hostel for poor and vulnerable children in India.  Plans are being put in place to extend this sponsorship across the school through other fundraising initiatives.  The donation from The Lodge of Hope came as a result of an enquiry Mark made through a family friend.  A case was put to the Lodge for consideration and it proved to be successful.  Mark said:  "We are so grateful to The Lodge Of Hope for their tremendous charitable gift. Sometimes we take for granted our own standard of living and education. The children Tong-Len educate and sponsor have come from the slums and given a new chance of life through both the Hostels they live in and the education they receive. The £250 donation today will be added to the money we have raised at Crawshaw School and used entirely for equipment and sponsorships for children less fortunate than ourselves.”

Mark will have the opportunity to see the results of the school's fundraising for Tong Len when he joins three other students on a trip to India during the Easter Holiday.  This trip is the first of its kind at Crawshaw and is the result of years of work and a number of staff exchanges with the GAV School in Northern India.  The links have been organised by the school's International Coordinator Steve Smyth with support and funding from the British Council.  Headteacher, Joanna Ruse said:  "On behalf of the school, I would like to take this opporutnity to thank The Lodge of Hope for their donation.  Tong Len is a superb cause and we are very proud of the work our students and staff are doing to develop global links and raise funds for charities, both at home and abroad.  Mark and the other International Ambassadors are a credit to the school."

You can find out more about the school's international links elsewhere on the website, particularly in the News and Press pages and we will of course provide a full report on the trip later in the year.
