International Links Taken to the Next Level

The Easter holiday saw another first for Crawshaw when a group of staff and students travelled to India to visit our partner school and chosen international charity.  The group, comprising of 4 International Student Ambassadors and 3 members of staff including International Coordinator, Steve Smyth, spent time with colleagues and peers at the GAV School in Kangra, Northern India as well as visiting the Tong Len Charity whom Crawshaw have supported over the last 6 years and raised £7000.

From left to right, Ruby Tait, Mark Hopper and Sophie O’Connell are pictured here the week before they left Leeds to make the long journey to New Delhi, pausing for a cold whistle stop tour of Helsinki.   Ms Pheasey and Miss Dolan completed the group, who were put through a thorough selection process for the privilege of taking part in the trip.  This included a formal interview, as well as a fund raising challenge which resulted in an additional £1200 being raised for the Tong Len Charity.  The money raised has been used to sponsor slum children, allowing them access education and shelter in hostels also paid for with fund raised money.

Here they are at the Tong Len office with Jamyang, the founder of Tong Len and his team.  The group took several photos on their journey, some of which are available in this gallery.  They also contributed to a blog whilst they were away to document their experience of a busy schedule which, amongst other things, included:

  • Working on developing joint curriculum projects for future visits and furthering Crawshaw's well established global ethos.
  • Taking part in Lessons including English, Maths, ICT, Food Technology and Science.
  • Working with GAV students to develop curriculum resources.
  • Students preparing an excerpt from Shakespeare with the Indian students  to perform.
  • Visiting the Tong Len Charity and the people from the displaced community living in slum conditions whom it supports.
  • Visiting the Charan slum community.
  • Visiting the Hostel that Tong Len runs and interviewing students and staff to find out about how the charity has affected their lives.
  • Attending 2 other local primary schools, visiting local families and touring the community.
  • Visiting the Dalai Lama’s Temple in McLeod Ganj.

Crawshaw has had a successful global school partnership with G.A.V. School for three years and there have been several staff exchanges between the schools.  This includes project work in subjects including English, Citizenship, Art, RE, ICT, Food Technology and Maths for joint curriculum projects.  If you would like to find out more about the work we have done to develop our international links, there are reports in our News pages.  Also see Crawshaw in the Press to read the press coverage we have received.  Both schools are developing their Global Dimension work and Crawshaw was awarded the Intermediate stage of the International Schools award In July 2011.

We look forward to welcoming a return delegation of staff and students from India in July.  If you would like find out more or be involved in the visit in July, contact Steve Smyth via the school switchboard.
