Prize Winners Enjoy Some R & R

On Wednesday 8th May 11 Year 9 students visited R & R Ice Cream factory at Leeming Bar.  This was a reward for students for winning Ahead Partnership's Make The Grade Ice Cream Competition, run in conjunction with Asda back in February, where a new flavoured ice cream had to be designed for Asda stores.  R & R Ice Cream, who supply Asda with their ice cream products, kindly opened their doors to the students and were excited to show the team around their headquarters.

The students were greeted by Clare McIntosh, Customer Marketing Manager for R & R Ice Cream and Louise Bamber, Product Manager from Asda.   They were given a tour of the premises including the test kitchen & the main ice cream factory, throughout which they learnt how a product is developed over a 9 month period from the initial design brief to production and up to the launch.

The winning team from the inter-school competition back in February, Alix Frosdick, Maia Wood & Charlotte Thompson, were introduced to their winning design of ice cream – orange fusion.  This product will be made into ice cream lollies which will be sold in some Asda stores and is due to be launched in September.  The three girls have been invited to the launch event, which they are extremely excited about.

The last session at the factory introduced a new range of frozen yogurts which are being produced as a healthier alternative to ice cream.  As well as seeing how things work at a company who supply a major supermarket chain, the students were treated to numerous samples of ice cream & frozen yogurt during their visit.

Alix Frosdick, one of the students on the winning team said "The trip to the ice cream factory was a great opportunity to find out about how our design of ice-cream could be made. I enjoyed the tour round the factory looking at how the machinery works and seeing the process behind making ice cream. The best part of the day was finding out about our design and how it had been developed and getting to test and taste the product before finding out that it was going to be sold in stores in September."

A big thanks to Make the Grade partners Asda and their supplier R & R Ice Cream for helping to make this happen. Likewise to Ahead Partnership for delivering yet another unique and interesting event for our students.  Finally a huge well done to the winning team and the wider group for being such fantastic ambassadors for the school.
