Rugby League Star has Students Reaching for the Sky

Paul Broadbent is a real star of Rugby League. In a career spanning 17 years, prop forward Paul represented England and Great Britain, playing over 450 first grade games for teams including Sheffield Eagles, Halifax, Hull and Wakefield.  This week, Paul was in school with Sky Sports "Living for Sport" programme involving a group of 14 Year 10 students studdying for the BTEC Sport qualification.

Academically challenged, Paul found sport to be the one school subject he enjoyed. Introduced to rugby at 11 years old, he found his sporting passion. He wasn’t as naturally gifted as some of his team mates and had to train hard to improve and compete with more talented players, but his passion and commitment to the game shone through.

Now an ambassador for the Living For Sport programme Paul (pictured below with the group) became the latest star to spend a day in school helping the group of students who have to plan and run as sporting event for younger students. They were selected because they have made an excellent start to BTEC Sport and for some will help them develop both their self confidence and leadership skills.

The programme helps them through the planning process looking at the 6 key skills to success, all of which can be applied in the short term to the sporting event and in the long term to them achieving there full potential.

  1. Mental toughness
  2. Hunger to achieve
  3. People skills
  4. Sports and life knowledge
  5. Breaking barriers
  6. Planning for success
