Year 7 Experience Medieval Life

On May 24th we were visited by two late 15th Century travellers, Ned Carlewe (Young Ned) and his wife Judith Ann Carlewe, who spent the day teaching Year 7 students about many aspects of medieval life.  The aim of the day was to engage the students by literally bringing the subject to life though a number of activities and with the use of various propos and costumes.

70 students were joined by a very excited and enthusiastic Mr Toepritz, who himself was inspired by a similar experience as a school by, to learn about and eventually teach History.  The group was treated to fully 'hands on' experience of medieval life.  This included sessions on the following subjects:

  • Medieval weapons and their development including several firing displays!
  • Castles and Seiges
  • Arming a knight
  • The role of the His Lordship's Household
  • Medieval food and drink
  • Medieval costumes and clothing
  • Question and answer sessions

Throughout the day students had a chance to get really close to the artefacts - to dress in them, use them, smell them and even taste some of them (the food, not gunpowder!)

The students were really involved and Young Ned commented on the depth and complexity of their questioning.  They were a credit to the school, sitting quietly and attentively throughout the day, taking a real interest, getting involved with the activities and asking lots of useful questions.  Well done to everyone involved!

Thanks must go to Mr Toepritz and the other staff who helped on the day and without whom it could not have taken place.  Finally a big thank you must go to our visitors, Ned and Judith Ann from www.historicalservicestoschools.co.uk for sharing their knowledge and passion for the subject.
