FBV in Computing and Business

DEMOCRACY

Students often work on coding or digital projects in groups, which involve democratic decision-making. They must listen to each other’s ideas, vote on project directions, and work collaboratively, mirroring the democratic processes found in wider society.

Students learn about the development of open-source software, which is based on democratic principles. This encourages students to understand the importance of shared ownership, collaboration, and transparency in software development.

In business studies, students learn about democratic decision-making within organisations, including the role of stakeholders such as employees, customers, and shareholders. Students may role-play boardroom scenarios where they vote on company policies or business strategies. Lessons often focus on how businesses must respond to consumer demand in a democratic marketplace, teaching students how democracy affects businesses through competition, market choices, and feedback from consumers.

RULE OF LAW

Computing education covers legal frameworks such as the Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, and intellectual property laws. Students learn the importance of following these laws when using and creating digital content, highlighting the need to respect legal boundaries in a digital world.

Lessons on cybersecurity teach students the importance of ethical behaviour in computing and the legal consequences of actions such as hacking, piracy, and data theft. Understanding these laws ensures students appreciate the rule of law in protecting individuals and businesses in the digital space.

Business studies highlight the importance of laws that govern business practices, such as employment law, consumer rights, health and safety regulations, and fair competition laws. Students learn that businesses must operate within legal frameworks to ensure fairness and ethical conduct. Students study the consequences of unethical or illegal behaviour in business, such as fraud or unfair treatment of workers, helping them understand the importance of adhering to the rule of law for the long-term success of a business.

MUTUAL RESPECT

Mutual respect is fostered in group projects where students must respect their peers’ ideas and contributions to coding or other computing tasks. This teamwork cultivates an environment where students value different viewpoints and skills. Students learn about respectful communication and behaviour online, including the importance of avoiding cyberbullying and respecting digital privacy. Teaching digital citizenship reinforces the value of mutual respect in both personal and professional online spaces.

Business studies emphasises the importance of mutual respect in the workplace, teaching students about the role of diversity, equal opportunities, and non-discriminatory policies in business environments. Students learn how businesses that promote respect and inclusivity are often more successful and harmonious. Lessons focus on the importance of treating customers, colleagues, and suppliers with respect, illustrating how respectful relationships are essential for a successful business. Case studies of businesses with positive customer relations help reinforce this value.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

In computing lessons, students are often given the freedom to choose programming languages, software, or tools for projects. This promotes creativity and independence, allowing students to take responsibility for their learning and technical decisions. Students learn about the freedom of expression online but are also taught the importance of being responsible and ethical when using social media, creating content, or sharing information. This promotes individual liberty while emphasizing respect for others' rights.

Business Studies encourages students to explore entrepreneurship, where they have the liberty to create their own business ideas, develop personal initiative, and take responsibility for their decisions. This nurtures self-reliance and independence. The curriculum helps students explore different career options and business opportunities, allowing them to make informed choices about their futures. They learn the importance of individual liberty in shaping their own career paths and financial independence.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS & BELIEFS

Computing allows students to explore how technology is used around the world, including in different cultural and religious contexts. Students develop an understanding of how computing and technology support diverse needs and beliefs globally. When designing digital content, students are encouraged to consider different cultural sensitivities and design ethically. This might involve being aware of colours, symbols, or references that could be interpreted differently across cultures and beliefs.

Business studies explores how businesses operate in global markets, where tolerance of different cultures, faiths, and beliefs is crucial for success. Students learn how companies must adapt their products, services, and communication to meet the needs of diverse populations. Students learn how businesses must ensure their marketing practices are inclusive and respectful of different cultural and religious beliefs. They discuss the importance of avoiding offensive advertising and creating campaigns that appeal to diverse audiences.
