FBV in Religious Studies

The Religious Studies (RS) curriculum provides a rich platform for teaching the Fundamental British Values (FBVs) of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs. RS naturally encourages students to explore diverse worldviews, faiths, and ethical systems, making it an ideal subject for instilling these values in a thoughtful and reflective way.

DEMOCRACY

In RS, students are often encouraged to debate ethical and philosophical questions, such as the role of religion in society, human rights, or moral dilemmas. These discussions mirror democratic processes, where students are expected to listen to others' opinions, present their arguments, and sometimes vote on resolutions or positions. This promotes understanding of democratic decision-making and the importance of different viewpoints in society. Students explore how various religious traditions interact with democratic principles. For example, they study how faith groups in the UK contribute to political discussions or examine democratic principles in religious communities, like voting for leaders in certain Christian denominations or decision-making processes in Hindu temples.

RULE OF LAW

RS often covers how religious laws (such as Sharia in Islam, Halakha in Judaism, or Canon Law in Christianity) intersect with or differ from the laws of the UK. By comparing religious and secular legal systems, students learn the importance of the rule of law in ensuring fairness, justice, and equality for all, while understanding that in a democratic society, UK law takes precedence. RS explores the concept of justice in both religious and secular contexts. Students discuss topics like crime and punishment, the death penalty, and the importance of human rights laws. This helps students understand how the rule of law protects individuals in society and ensures that justice is carried out fairly, without discrimination.

MUTUAL RESPECT

RS is fundamentally about understanding and respecting different faiths and worldviews. By studying major world religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism, and Buddhism, as well as secular worldviews like Humanism, students learn to respect the diversity of belief systems in the UK and around the world. They learn that all individuals, regardless of their faith, deserve respect and dignity. During discussions and debates, students are taught to express their views respectfully and listen to others, even if they disagree. This promotes mutual respect in the classroom and helps students understand the importance of respectful interaction in a pluralistic society.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

One of the central topics in RS is the exploration of different religious beliefs and the right to hold, express, or change one’s beliefs. Students learn that in the UK, people have the freedom to follow any religion or none, and this is protected by law. Lessons on religious freedom help students appreciate the value of individual liberty in shaping one’s own identity and beliefs. RS encourages students to think about their own moral values and how they might approach ethical dilemmas, such as euthanasia, abortion, or environmental ethics. This nurtures a sense of personal responsibility and the freedom to make ethical choices based on reasoned judgment.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS & BELIEFS

RS covers the diversity of religious practices and beliefs in the UK and globally. Students explore how different religions coexist in modern society and the importance of tolerance and acceptance in a multicultural world. By learning about the core beliefs, rituals, and values of various religions, students gain an appreciation for the significance of tolerance. RS lessons often focus on issues of religious prejudice, such as Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, or discrimination against non-religious people. Students learn the historical and contemporary impacts of intolerance and are encouraged to stand against discrimination in all its forms. This helps foster a tolerant attitude toward those with different faiths and beliefs.
