FBV in Health and Social Care

DEMOCRACY

The principle of democracy is explored in Health and Social Care through discussions about individuals’ rights, the role of service users, and how democratic systems shape health and care policies:

Students learn about the importance of service users being able to express their views and make choices about their care. This reflects the democratic principle of giving people a say in decisions that affect their lives, such as patient-centred care planning, where individuals’ preferences are respected.

The curriculum covers how health and social care systems are influenced by democratic processes, such as government decisions about funding, public health campaigns, and laws regarding healthcare services. Students may discuss how voting and democratic participation impact the quality of health and social care provision.

In lessons, students often engage in group work where they make decisions about case studies or collaborative projects. These activities emphasize the importance of democratic decision-making and considering multiple viewpoints.

RULE OF LAW

Health and Social Care education emphasizes the importance of following laws and regulations to protect individuals and ensure fair and safe care:

  • Health and social care legislation: Students learn about the various laws and policies that regulate health and social care in the UK, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act, The Care Act 2014, and the Equality Act 2010. These laws protect both service users and providers, ensuring safety, dignity, and fairness in care services.
  • Safeguarding: Safeguarding policies are a key part of the curriculum, where students explore how laws protect vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those with disabilities, from harm or abuse. Understanding these rules helps students appreciate the importance of legal frameworks in ensuring care and protection.
  • Confidentiality and data protection: Students learn about the legal requirements for maintaining confidentiality and handling personal data, such as the Data Protection Act and GDPR. This teaches the importance of respecting the rule of law in maintaining the privacy and dignity of service users.

MUTUAL RESPECT

Mutual respect is central to the Health and Social Care curriculum, where the focus is on treating all individuals with dignity and ensuring their needs are met in a respectful and compassionate manner:

  • Person-centred care: Students are taught that care should be personalized to meet the unique needs, preferences, and circumstances of each individual. This reflects the principle of mutual respect, where each person’s needs and wishes are valued and respected in their care.
  • Professional behaviour and relationships: Lessons emphasize the importance of professional conduct in health and social care settings, where respect for service users, colleagues, and families is essential. Students learn how respectful communication and empathetic care are fundamental to building trust and providing high-quality services.
  • Respecting diversity: Respect for individuals' backgrounds, beliefs, and values is a key theme. Students explore how to provide culturally sensitive care that respects the diverse backgrounds of service users and how to avoid discrimination in health and social care practice.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

Health and Social Care education promotes individual liberty by focusing on the rights of individuals to make informed choices about their health and care:

  • Empowerment in care: Students learn how care workers can support individuals to exercise their rights to make informed decisions about their own care and treatment. This includes discussions about autonomy, dignity, and the importance of respecting individuals' decisions, whether about their medical treatments or daily activities.
  • Informed consent: Students study the concept of informed consent in healthcare, where service users must have the freedom to choose or refuse treatment after being given the necessary information. This reinforces the idea of individual liberty and personal choice in care settings.
  • Promoting independence: The curriculum highlights how health and social care services should support individuals to live as independently as possible. Students learn about care approaches that respect people’s right to make their own choices and live according to their preferences, even in situations where they need additional support.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS & BELIEFS

The Health and Social Care curriculum addresses the need to understand and respect the cultural, religious, and personal beliefs of service users, especially in diverse care settings:

  • Cultural competence in care: Students are taught about the importance of cultural competence, which involves understanding how faith, culture, and personal beliefs influence people's views on health, illness, and care. This includes learning how dietary needs, religious practices, and cultural preferences can affect care plans, and how to accommodate these respectfully.
  • Diversity in health and social care needs: Students explore case studies and scenarios where people from different religious and cultural backgrounds have specific health or care needs. This helps them understand the importance of being sensitive to and tolerant of differences in health beliefs and practices.
  • Celebrating diversity: Lessons often include discussions on how diverse communities contribute to the health and social care sector and how care workers can celebrate and support diversity. By learning about different faiths, beliefs, and cultural practices, students develop tolerance and the skills needed to provide respectful care.
