Learning at Crawshaw Academy

Modern Foreign Languages

Crawshaw Academy_2021 (96) (Large)

Crawshaw Languages Department are a passionate team of linguists who work together to open the wonderful world of Languages up to our students, in a fun and engaging way.

The department consists of three specialist teachers currently teaching, French, German and Spanish.

In KS3, all our students learn French, with year 7 and 8 studying 4 hours of per fortnight and 3 hours in year 9. An introduction to German was added this current academic year, for students currently in Year 7 ‘A band’. This additional hour provides students with the foundations in a second language, which we hope to build on in the coming years.

We currently have GCSE French and Spanish classes working on the AQA specification. Our current year 11's opted for French in year 10 and receive 5 hours per fortnight over the two KS4 years. Our year 10 French and 11 Spanish GCSE groups are following the ‘applied learning’ option route; thus, they started their GCSE in year 9 and receive 4 hours per fortnight, throughout years 9, 10 and 11. We are proud to have students at Crawshaw studying two languages to GCSE and we are proud of our above average GCSE results in both languages.

Crawshaw Languages Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Languages Curriculum Overviews

In both French and Spanish, we follow the AQA GCSE and we have access to a host of resources to support our teaching, including ‘Studio’ & ‘Viva’ online textbooks and Pearson Active Learn interactive resources. We are an innovative and collaborative department and thus also create a lot of our own resources, which we share via our department SharePoint site.

In addition to this and exemplifying the Red Kite goal of ‘Innovating with technology’, we have also created our own student website, “The Languages Hub”. A firm student favourite, where we create and share games, songs and videos, and a host of fun and engaging activities to support our students in their learning.

The facilities in the department are excellent; we have three large, light and airy classrooms all equiped with a PC, interactive whiteboard, visulaiser and webcam. There is also wifi in all of our classrooms, which we are looking to build upon with one-to-one student devices in the near future. Our classrooms are adjacent to new an ICT suite, which we have regular access to and which has allowed us to develop our use of technology. Not only in terms of our student website, but also via our reading, listening, grammar and translation assessments, which are conducted via self-marking quizzes, made in Microsoft Forms, which enable us to efficiently and effectively assess and feedback to students.

In order to foster cultural and linguistic awareness in our students, especially in recent times where trips have been unrealistic, we have established a link with a school in south-west France and have set up a pen pal scheme for years 8 and 10. Year 7 have also participated in a Christmas Card exchange and we aim to build on this link to provide further authentic communication for our students. Moreover we very much hope to return to trips to France and Spain in the forthcoming accademic year.
