Success for New SEND Pathways Provision

Posted 8th July 2024

Inclusion is at the heart of Crawshaw Academy's ethos and purpose.  With an alternative provision and SEND system creaking at the seams, it was a vital part of school improvement vision that we establish a setting that could meet the a minority of our students' needs more effectively.

We are incredibly proud of our Pathways provision as it comes to the end of its first term.  This addition to our curriculum model serves students with SEMH needs, and it has been rewarding to see how these students' confidence and wellbeing has improved over the course of this time.

Students are given a clear rewards system which they have responded well to and the small group teaching has increased their engagement with learning.  For students in this group, we have seen behavioural incidents falling, and numbers going to external alternative provision falling.

Student voice shows that the student feel a greater connection to school and to learning than before they were taught in this way.  Several students have moved through the provision and are back attending mainstream school with a sense of purpose and pride.   Our specialist staff in Pathways have transformed the experience for these young people, focusing on targeted learning combined with well being and emotional support.

Parent voice has been overwhelmingly positive; 'my son is far happier now, as he manages better in smaller group and the teachers are the same throughout the day' and another reported 'with these teachers working with him he is learning to  behave. He has improved really well. He is finally in the right place, this is what he has needed all along as he has had these problems since primary.'

To see some of our Pathways students recognition at our Awards ceremony in Pudsey Parish Church highlighted the true meaning of inclusion ; the right curriculum for the needs of the student leads to success.
