Learning at Crawshaw Academy

PSHE and RSE

PSHE is a planned programme of learning that equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.

The curriculum is organised around six key themes:

  • Rights, Responsibilities and British Values
  • Celebrating Diversity and Equality
  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
  • Staying Safe Online and Offline
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Life Beyond School

Topics include:

  • mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • healthy lifestyles
  • financial education
  • careers and employability
  • drugs, alcohol and vaping
  • online safety
  • diversity and equality
  • personal safety.

Our PSHE curriculum follows a spiral approach, meaning key themes are revisited throughout Years 7–11 with increasing depth. The programme is regularly reviewed to reflect safeguarding priorities, local issues and student voice.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is a statutory part of the PSHE curriculum and is delivered in line with Department for Education guidance.

RSE supports students to develop healthy, respectful relationships and provides age-appropriate knowledge about physical health, emotional wellbeing and sexual health.

Students learn about:

  • families and different types of relationships
  • respect, consent and healthy relationships
  • puberty and sexual development
  • contraception and sexually transmitted infections
  • online relationships and digital safety
  • personal safety and safeguarding
  • equality, diversity and inclusion.

Biological aspects of RSE are taught through the Science curriculum, while wider relationship and wellbeing topics are delivered through PSHE.

Parents can view our detailed lesson content and curriculum overview using the documents below.

Parents' right to withdraw

Parents have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from the non-statutory elements of sex education within RSE up until three terms before their child turns 16.

Requests should be made in writing to Dawn Nicholson, Assistant Headteacher. Alternative learning will be provided where appropriate.
