DEMOCRACY

Democratic principles are reflected in many aspects of PE, particularly through teamwork and decision-making in sports: In team sports and group activities, students often engage in discussions and decision-making processes about tactics, team roles, or game strategies. This reflects democratic practices, where each student has a say, and decisions are made collectively; Students may have opportunities to lead warm-ups, coach peers, or take on leadership roles in team activities. These experiences teach them how to listen to others, make group decisions, and take responsibility, mirroring democratic processes; In some PE lessons, students may be given a choice of activities or sports to participate in, with decisions made by voting. This gives students a voice and teaches them the importance of democratic engagement and majority decisions.

RULE OF LAW

PE reinforces the importance of rules and understanding the role of fair play in sport and society: In all sports and games, students are required to follow established rules. This teaches the importance of playing fairly, adhering to guidelines, and understanding that rules are necessary to ensure equality and safety in competitive environments. Students learn about the consequences of breaking rules in sport, such as fouls, penalties, or disqualification. This helps them understand that rules exist for fairness and safety and that there are consequences for misconduct, just as there are in broader society. Students are taught to respect referees, umpires, and teachers who enforce rules in sports. This reflects the wider principle of respecting legal authorities and understanding their role in maintaining order and fairness.

MUTUAL RESPECT

Respect is a fundamental element of all PE activities, where students learn to work cooperatively and show consideration for others: PE lessons teach students the importance of showing respect to teammates, opponents, and officials. Good sportsmanship, such as shaking hands after a game and respecting the effort of others, reinforces mutual respect. In team sports, students must work together to achieve a common goal. They learn that success depends on respecting others’ contributions and communicating effectively. This reinforces the importance of mutual respect in any collaborative effort. PE encourages students to support one another in improving skills and achieving personal fitness goals. Providing positive encouragement and respecting the abilities and efforts of others fosters a respectful and inclusive environment.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

PE encourages students to express themselves, make choices, and take responsibility for their physical health and well-being: Students often have opportunities to choose which sports or physical activities they wish to participate in, allowing them to explore their personal interests and preferences in physical education. This fosters individual liberty and encourages students to take ownership of their physical fitness.  PE lessons may involve students setting their own fitness or skill-development goals, helping them develop autonomy and the ability to make informed decisions about their physical health. This encourages a sense of personal responsibility and freedom in managing their well-being. Students are often given the chance to explore various roles within sport, such as being a player, coach, or referee, allowing them to develop their skills and interests according to their own choices.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS & BELIEFS

PE provides opportunities to promote tolerance and respect for diversity, particularly through inclusive practices and learning about sports from different cultures: PE lessons are designed to include students of all abilities, genders, and backgrounds. This promotes tolerance by ensuring that everyone is given an equal opportunity to participate and succeed in physical activities, regardless of their background or physical capability. Students may explore how different cultures and faiths participate in sports and physical activities. For example, students can learn about the origins of martial arts in Asia, cricket in South Asia, or the significance of traditional dances from various cultures. This fosters an appreciation for the diversity of physical activities across the world. In PE, teachers respect and accommodate students' religious beliefs, such as dress requirements or fasting practices during Ramadan. This helps students understand the importance of tolerance and respect for different beliefs in practical settings.
